JL vs JK Hood: 4 Differences That Matter Before You Buy
The first question most owners ask when shopping for a hood: "Are JL and JK hoods interchangeable?"
Short answer: No. They're separate toolings — dimensions, outline, latch and hinges are all different. Bolt a JL hood onto a JK and three of four mounting points won't line up. This guide spells out the differences so you order the right one the first time — saving yourself a freight return and a wasted weekend.
JL vs JK at a glance
| Item | Wrangler JK (2007-2018) | Wrangler JL (2018+) |
|---|---|---|
| Generation | Ended production 2018 | Replaced the JK in 2018 |
| Hood outline | Squarer, harder lines | Rounded, higher center rise |
| Dimensions | Shorter and narrower | Longer and wider (bigger front end) |
| Latch | Dual mechanical latch | Single latch assembly + cable |
| Hinges | Dedicated positions | Different positions & hole spacing |
| Factory vents | Some trims have them | None — vented hoods are aftermarket |
| Gladiator JT compat. | No | Yes — shares the platform with JT 2020+ |
The 4 differences, explained
1. Size & outline — a generation apart
The JL's entire front end grew: the hood is longer, wider and rises higher in the center. Park them side by side and it's obvious — a JK hood on a JL looks one size too small.
2. Latch system — the JL is cable-operated
The JK uses a traditional dual mechanical latch; the JL uses a single latch assembly with an interior release cable. The JL hood's latch position and cable routing are designed for that system — JK latch parts don't fit a JL, and vice versa.
3. Hinges & hole spacing — the mounting points don't match
Hinge bolt positions and counts differ. People have forced cross-generation installs online; the results are invariably drilling, shims and sealant. We don't recommend it — it compromises structural integrity and crash behavior.
4. Vent design — a gap the aftermarket filled
Some JK trims shipped with factory heat-extraction vents; the JL has none, which is exactly why vented hoods became such a popular JL/JT upgrade — and why that market is more active than the JK one.

Quick note on the JK's used market
The JK ran 2007-2018 (with a 2018 transition year sold alongside the JL). The used fleet is enormous, which is why JK parts support remains strong — and why there's still a healthy market for JK vented hoods among owners keeping their trucks for the long haul.
